5 Questions to Ask About Your Digital Learning Platform

The New Year brings with it new resolutions for people…but often, these get forgotten within a few weeks. Instead, what if you used the new year as a time of evaluating what’s working and what’s not for your school? Now is a great time for evaluation of how the virtual learning is going in your school because summer break will be here before you know it! As the teachers and staff return for the second half of the school year, consider asking the following questions to assess your school’s digital learning platform.
Do teachers know how to use your current platform?
If you’re frequently hearing phrases like “We didn’t get the right books” or “I’m still waiting on getting things set up” then teachers and students are frustrated with the current platform your school is using, which means you’re wasting valuable time, money and resources.
Instead, you need a platform that connects to your current SIS, offers ongoing training, and someone that can be contacted directly with a quick response time when troubleshooting needs to be done. Essentially, cutting out any IT person or middleman at your school busy with other ongoing tech problems.
When teachers know how to use the platform or know who to call when they need help, then it’s a better experience for the students and families as well.
What happens when the designated person at your school, who knows the software, moves on?
Often, nobody knows who’s “in charge” of your school’s ebook implementation and ongoing support…or maybe nobody is! If there is one person who knows the tech and setup and they leave, then how do teachers, students and parents get help? Ebook implementation and ongoing support requires a major learning curve, and nobody has time for that at the beginning of the school year, in the middle of the school year, or ever! Instead, wouldn’t you love your teachers to arrive on the first day of school saying, “I feel like I got my weekends back!”
Are you trying to figure out what books to use for next year?
Most schools are already using ebooks at some level. The downside of this is that digital books have to be purchased every year, which means time is of the essence! Ideally, you’d be able to pick out the books you think you want and get sample copies to review, as well as feedback from other schools who are currently using them. Then, you’d know that you’ll be happy with the books that you’re selecting for your school.
Is the first month of the school year a nightmare trying to set up multiple logins for multiple publisher platforms?
Since teachers don’t all use the same digital books, they will also be using different digital platforms from multiple publishers. Schools can easily be using 20 to 30 different platforms! This can get complicated for teachers, students and the designated IT person, trying to troubleshoot hundreds of requests from students and parents trying to access multiple platforms, all with different logins.
Ideally, the solution is to have a single sign in for each student to access all their books and/or publisher platforms in one place, along with publisher logins and licenses listed in one place. This gives ease of access to student and parents so they don’t have to organize their digital books themselves as well as saving your teachers and IT staff from being ‘password finders.’ Sounds amazing right!?!
